FULLY INSURED PLANS
In a traditional fully insured plan an employer pays a premium to the insurance company and the insurance company uses those premiums to pay for employees medical expenses and is at risk for claims costs. There is no risk in a fully insured plan because the insurance company has assumed the risk in exchange for the premium . However, no refund is given for premium that is not used.
BUY DOWN PLANS
A buy down plan is when an employer purchases a high-deductible health insurance plan and then supplements that plan to ultimately provide employees with a lower deductible. Once an employee meets the lower deductible set by the Buy-Down Plan, the employer provides the benefit directly to the employee until the high deductible plan begins. The cost difference between high and low deductible plans can be substantial making a buy down plan a low-risk option for most companies.
SELF OR LEVEL FUNDED PLANS
With a self-funded health plan, you pay for your employees’ claims with your own funds. In most self-funded plans you contract with a third party to administer the plan. Since you assume the risk in a self-funded plan the employer also purchases stop-loss Insurance to limit the financial risk. If the group has a low claim year the saving can be substantial. Level funding is another option that gives employers the benefits of self-funding while providing better control of risk.
